Who's Going to Know???

Why is it important to do the right thing even when no one is watching? If no one will ever know, why should we make the hard choice? It's a question every person wrangles with from time to time. I know I’d do. For instance, the other day I was balancing my checkbook when I realized that Amazon had refunded me twice for the same item. I called customer service (who was surprised to talk to a customer that wanted to give money back) and explained the problem.

Why did I take the time to make the call, wait on hold, and go through the hassle?

Because it was the right thing to do. God saw it and I know He will honor it. The same applies to my choice to decline an invitation to join a group of Christians in an activity that my conscience feels is sin. Even though it would be easier to go along with the flow and I am well aware that the activity has been deemed a “gray area”, I truly believe it is sin. So I’m staying home. When I worry about being offensive or even the possible advantageous connections I’ll be missing at this event, my response is “God sees my heart and He will honor it.” You see, I believe the determining factor shouldn’t be whether or not we get caught, but rather the truth that God will see, God will know, and He will honor our choice to do the right thing. Why do we do the right thing even when we could get away with the wrong choice? Because we love Jesus.

Because we want to have a healthy relationship with Him. Because we want to honor God with our choices and experience His full blessing on our lives. It’s not about who sees—it’s about who lives inside of us. What does HE think? That’s what matters.

“The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right; his ears are open to their cries for help.” Psalms 34:15 NLT
